Very interesting and thought provoking exhibits. Extremely helpful staff and volunteers. Great use of old industrial buildings. We'll be back soon!

Pros: interesting exhibits, great volunteers, nice part of the USA

MassMOCA presents awesome performances as well as contemporary art on the cutting edge. If you go to MOCA, take a tour -- they are excellent. Art shows feature internationally important artists and art trends, not for the faint of art. Performing arts events have included Philip Glass, Steve Reich and many other luminaries in music, dance and film. Great dance parties.

There is no permanent collection at MASS MoCA -- (that's why i gave it a 5) and that's fine because it's a contemporary art museum (not a modern art museum...as you have it listed). they are always on the cutting edge of art and really make the drive from anywhere worthwhile. the robert wilson exhibit is amazing as is the general look, feel, and ambience of the buildings and complex. they're performing arts events are also spectacular as are the venues. there really is no other place like this in the states.

Pros: inexpensive, great scenery, performing arts

Cons: winter weather

The Robert Wilson 14 Stations is in itself worth the price of admission, but there is also a great Guston show (on Richard Nixon!). For a great day, visit the Klimt exhibition at nearby Clark Art Institute, then see the survey of new art from Vienna at MASS MoCA. Hoffman gets digitized. (A discount package ticket for joint admission is available, but it's not well marketed, so you'll have to ask.)

Pros: family friendly, stunning art, great shop & cafe

Western Massachusetts' MASS MoCA offers up enough astonishing breadth (and girth!) to stun even the non arty crowd into submission. Set in a lovingly restored mill complex, art on the largest scale imaginable never fails to delight, challenge, and what seems to be MoCA's specialty, unabashedly entertain.

The transformation of a huge, 18th century mill complex into a museum of contemporary art is spectacular. The buildings alone are worth the trip, and the museum is being filled.

Pros: beautiful setting, uncrowded usually, contemporary art

Cons: still new, city has to catch up, contemporary art

Editor's Review

Massachusetts' modern-art museum is the largest of its kind in the United States.  See the full editorial review.
