Editorial Review for Edgartown – by Ben Williams
The Scene
Edgartown was the first settlement on Martha's Vineyard and the colonial-style houses that dominate the waterfront reflect the taste of the whaling captains who came here in the 19th century. Many of these buildings have been turned into hotels, restaurants and stores and the town sees heavy tourist traffic in the peak summer months.
The Experience
Go to the Vineyard Museum and Historical Center, which is spread across a series of historic buildings and gardens, for a guide to Edgartown's most notable houses. On Main Street, the Old Whaling Church (available for private events) dominates with its Greek Revival columns; and the Vincent House, the oldest on the island and now a museum, dates back to 1672. On South Water Street you'll find the oldest Chinese pagoda tree on the continent, and the house of Valentine Pease upon whose ship Herman Melville made his only whaling voyage.
